Chelsea have been handed a significant boost in their pursuit of Niklas Sule, with Bayern Munich reportedly ready to cash in on the defender.
Thomas Tuchel has overseen dramatic improvements in Chelsea’s defensive record since taking over the reins from Frank Lampard but is looking to further strengthen at the back with the addition of at least one signing in the summer transfer window.
Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Paris Saint-German’s Marquinhos are both on the club’s shortlist of targets and Tuchel is known to be an admirer of Bayern Munich and Germany centre-back Sule, who has just one year remaining on his current contract at the Allianz Arena.
Talks over a possible extension have stalled and the Bundesliga champions must decide whether to sell the 25-year-old this summer of risk losing him on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.
According to German publication SportBild, Bayern can now ‘very well imagine separating’ with Sule if they receive a suitable offer for his signature ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.
However, Sule is keen to put his plans for the future on hold until this summer’s European Championships are over after being included in Joachim Low’s 26-man Germany squad for the tournament.
The 6 ft 5 in centre-half is coming to the end of his fourth year with Bayern after joining from Hoffenheim for a fee of around £17million back in 2017.
He has made 133 appearances in that time, helping the club win four back-to-back league titles, two DFB-Pokal titles, three DFL-Supercups and last year’s Champions League.
Bayern’s soon-to-be CEO, Oliver Kahn, encouraged Sule to commit his future to the club while addressing the speculation surrounding the defender’s contract situation earlier this month.
‘You have to see what package we can offer a player,’ the ex-Bayern and Germany goalkeeper said.
‘Bayern have an excellent squad that can win all titles.
‘And this wonderful city! What more do you want as a player?!’
